This is the canonical index for the whole CanIBikeHere dataset. Where the trail apps crowd-source ride logs, we read the land manager's own record: a trail is listed here only when the U.S. Forest Service designates it bike-allowed or Class 1 e-bike-allowed and it runs at least half a mile. Every trail page carries its mileage, surface, USFS Trail Class, grade-based difficulty and the bicycle and Class 1/2/3 e-bike status with season — so you can confirm legality before you load the bike.

What does the CanIBikeHere trail index cover?

It indexes 14,192 distinct ridable National Forest System trails across 39 states and 110 national forests. A trail appears here only when the U.S. Forest Service designates it as bike-allowed or Class 1 e-bike-allowed and it runs at least half a mile — so every page answers "can I legally ride here?" from the land manager's own data.

Where does the trail data come from?

The U.S. Forest Service National Forest System Trails dataset (EDW Trans_Trail_NFS_Publish) — official travel-management designations recording per-trail bicycle and Class 1/2/3 e-bike access, surface, USFS Trail Class, grade and season. It is public-domain federal data, not crowd-sourced trail reports.

What do the e-bike classes mean?

Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist with no throttle and assist up to 20 mph; Class 2 add a throttle; Class 3 assist up to 28 mph. The Forest Service designates each class separately, so a trail open to Class 1 is not automatically open to Class 2 or 3 — each trail page lists the status and season per class.

Is the grade-based difficulty the same as a mountain-bike trail rating?

No. Our difficulty buckets (Easy, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert) are derived from the USFS GRADE field — how steep the trail is — not the green/blue/black technical rating you would see on a trail-network sign. Use it as a fitness and gradient hint, not a measure of technical difficulty.
